The world is not on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for Affordable and Clean Energy

7 Jun 2023

Despite the increased momentum of renewables in many parts of the world, a UN report says that we are not on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) for Affordable and Clean Energy.

SDG 7 aims to “ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all” by 2030, a goal that would be met by achieving universal access to electricity, improving energy efficiency, and incorporating renewables into the energy mix. While a substantial increase in renewables can be seen in many areas, funding to support clean energy in low- and middle- income countries is no longer enough to keep them on pace.

If major improvements are not made, the UN currently projects that 1.9 billion people will lack access to clean cooking in 2030, while 660 million will lack electricity.
