Carbon Confessions with Clean Fuels Alliance America
3 Feb 2025Our Senior Consultant, Colleen Cochran, joined the Clean Fuels Alliance America annual conference in San Diego, CA. The conference connects key players in the biodiesel, renewable diesel, and sustainable aviation fuel industries.
Colleen participated in a panel discussion “Carbon Confessions: From CIs to Scope Emissions,” alongside Veronica Bradley of Clean Fuels Alliance America, Mehul Khandelwal of Smart Freight Centre, and moderated by Sean Newsum of Airlines for America. The session unpacked the complexities and importance of carbon accounting in the clean fuels industry. Some take-aways here:
- Feedstock and fuel producers focus on carbon intensity (CI) scores to participate in regulatory programs like Low Carbon Fuels Standards (LCFS)
- There are differences in the methodologies used to quantify emissions, such as CI scores, fuel emission factors (EFs), and corporate inventories.
- Carbon accounting helps to translate the environmental benefits of clean fuels from producers to direct and indirect consumers
- Tools like sustainable certification schemes, registries, and upcoming technologies will continue to build confidence in the environmental benefits of clean fuels.

Despite policy ambiguity, the industry is moving forward – driven by the urgency to decarbonize today. Colleen was inspired by this momentum and the collective commitment to action.
We’re excited to continue collaborating with Clean Fuels on research, education, and tools to help producers and consumers navigate corporate accounting and voluntary disclosures.
